Health Careers Student Success At West Shore

Health Careers Class 2020

These Class of 2020 Health Careers Students earned the industry credential "STNA" through their West Shore Career Tech program in April. Now in their senior year, they are ready to begin their clinical care experience in our partner facilities, O'Neill Healthcare Lakewood and Cleveland Clinic Fairview Hospital. Students have also planned community health education service projects for the upcoming school year, including Blood Pressure Screening and a Hand Washing Campaign for flu season.

In addition, five of these students gained employment over the summer as Nursing Assistants at Crestmont North Nursing Care Facility! Since the demand for caregivers is so high, our program is able to help fill this employment gap in our local community.

Gaining this credential and actual patient care experience gives these fine students a real edge when applying to college Health Science programs. Most pre-nursing/pre-therapy and pre-med programs require the applicant to have patient care experience prior to being accepted to the program of study. Health Careers graduates from West Shore have found much success in meeting the college program admission requirements. They are also equipped with Medical Terminology college credit earned in the high school program, saving time and money in coursework.

The Health Careers Program at West Shore is in its 14th year and wishes to acknowledge and thank the district and our community for their support! We are providing a rigorous, relevant course of study leading to a high-demand career that serves the needs of our community and beyond.

If you have or know a student who may be interested in a nursing, medical, therapy or health science career, we invite you to strongly consider attending our program!

The program teacher can be reached at jacqueline.smith@lakewoodcityschools.org and would be a happy to talk with you.
