Lakewood has constructed a new Refuse facility, to give them a better way to process trash, and recycling. Using some of the old structure, where trucks are still stored at night. The new side allows residents a very nice easy drive through recycling experience. While many may never see it or use it, those that do will appreciate it. Everything from checking in to emptying is easier and less stressful. I got up there early opening day, hoping Division Manager Glen Bleich might show me around, and I was in luck. Let’s new at the new facility and process. ©2024 Lakewood Observer, Inc.

October 3, Lakewood Fire Department went to the Tri-C Safety Training Facility, for training, and to brush up. One of the reasons Lakewood Firefighters are so good is their constant training. On this occasion they invited Mayor Meghan George to join them in the burning building. She handled it well. Even with training being in a building filled with smoke, and walls of fire can get to you. She was in there for about 15 minutes! Ward One Councilman Kyle Baker stopped by to show support. A fasinating day was had by all. Here are my photos.

Each year Westshore Police and Fire stage "Cleveland Heroes Run" past the Fallen Heroes Memorial on Riverside Drive/Rocky River Drive/State Route 237. When you realize that every time a first repsonder responds, they could be putting their life on the line. It is also a good event to support and say thank you to all. 2021 Lakewood Observer
Captain Peter Hempfling of the Lakewood Fire Department was thanked by the Air Force Thunderbirds with a ride in one of the planes!
Peter is a US Army Veteran and career firefighter who has worked for Lakewood for 30 years. Recently he and his team were awarded commendations from the Cleveland Clinic EMS Leadership for their heroic actions.
In December 2020, Hempfling and his team responded to a call for a pregnant woman who was unconscious and having seizures. He used his 30 years of experience to treat, stabilize and transport her. Both the mother and child survived thanks to Capt. Hempfling and his team.
We are so very proud of Peter, and all of our Fire and Police Departments.

One of the nicest lots in Lakewood, Ohio is 1015 Nicholson. It is on point and faces downtown. Lots to other sides or elsewhere have no where near the view of 1015. The house was recently purchased for demolition, and a new house. The original home was built by the owner of shipping company. He originally built a house on the lot next to 1015 and was so disappointed by the view, rebuilt at 1015! I had a chance to tour the home a week before the demo was to start. Then the new owner speaking with members of Lakewood Histrionical Society who pinted out, not just the restores and their sales of saved items, but some of the tiles on his roof were worth $10,000 each, and some of the bathroom fixtures were worth $1,000 or more. So working with various people he saved what he could, including the leaded glass doors for the new home. 80% of the tiles on his roof being bought, a safe was found, and still has not been opened.
This week, the demolition started. Here are some of the photos. All photos are the preoperty of the Lakewood Observer, Inc. 2017

First off none of these accidents were in Lakewood. The first accident was in Rocky River LFD responded mutual aid to RRFD and was placed inservice by them. While LFD apparatus were returning to Lakewood RRFD Truck 66 was struck by the van. LFD responded back with Car 2, Truck 1, Engine 3 and Medics 1,2 and 4 (this is our standard I 90 response). When LFD arrived on scene LFD personnel extricated the female passenger from the van and the crews from Medics 1 & 4 transported her to Metro. LFD officer in charge requested Engine 3 to be dispatched to assist Police in closing 90 at Mckinley. At that time Medic 3 was dispatched on another medical call. Engine 3 arrived at the Alger on ramp at about the time the CPD officer was struck, Engine 3 then entered on to 90 headed east in the west bound lane to block traffic and protect personnel on the scene and start treatment of the CPD officer. Medic 3 responded from Lakewood ER to 90 LFD Engine 2 and Medic 2 made a U turn from the first accident in Rocky River and responded back to the accident in Cleveland. Medic 3 arrived on the scene the officer was placed in Medic 3 and transported to Metro with Medics from Engine 3. The total time spent from time of call till the officer was in Metro was 24 minutes. The patients were transported to Metro because it is the Level 1 Trauma Center. While all of this was going on LFD also handled another car crash on Lakewood Hts and transported that patient. LFD was able to assist 2 other communities with serious incidents and still we were able to provide service to the citizens of Lakewood. LFD, LPD and Lakewood Public Works crews all responded to assit at these incidents. I am proud of all the the Lakewood Safety forces accomplished dealing with multiple complex incidents on Tuesday morning.

I had been following the life of a bald eagle couple, (they mate for life) in Rocky River Reservation, the female had laid a single egg. While hunting for food, the make was killed by a passenger plane landing at Cleveland Hopkins Airport. With shock and much sadness, I started to wonder what would happen to mom and the egg. Some wondered if the miracle of Sandy Ridge would happen here where another male would help. Sure enough another male showed up, and started to help about 5 days ago the egg hatched, and the male has continued to help. Here is the update with the first photos of the baby! Stay tuned more photos daily.

The great diversity of wildlife in an around Lakewood and the Emerald Necklace with it great trails, for hiking, biking, running along with some of the best fishing in the area, make Lakewood a wonderful place to call home. Lakewood used to have decorations all over town. Detroit Ave. and Madison Ave. up and down the street. Huge display of lights at Lakewood Park with luminaries on the bike trail, just marvelous stuff. Now everything has been moved by LakewoodAlive's orders to the business district of "Mainstreet" in Lakewood's "Downtown." While some of us were driving around and complaining, suddenly the beauty of the effort came forward. Each and every snowflake is different. Just like the real things. So we went out and documented the snowflakes, and noticed that LA had brought an entire theme to not just "DowqntowN" on "Mainstreet" but throughout the city!
