They are back!

Image
Never really left the area, but between March and July you can see them near the nest.

Image
Right now building up the massive nest. The birds are 3' tall, so you can see how massive the nests are. Some weighing 2 tons or more.

Image
A little making out!

Nothing like a Lakewood Porch.

Wildlife on all levels on an upswing. Deer start coming out at dusk.

Then the light show started!

A Lakewood Grackle taken off from the water bowl. Gary Rice prefer these birds and photos over...

Image
A near Lakewood Bald Eagle.

The grackle is an aggressive bird. Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm.

The Bald Eagles just a short walk south of Lakewood have rebuilt their nest again!

GREAT photos Jim!

Hey, I love all animals, and birds particularly...but...

The philosophical point that I once made with Jim was simply my wonderment at why society as a whole, these days, seems to focus on the cute little hunter/killer animals, rather than the relatively harmless (and often vegan) kind? When I grew up, we heard about cute little bunny rabbits, ducklings, and cud-chewing cows. Now, they tell us about how cool hawks, eagles, wolves, and other top-of-the-food chain flesh-ripping animals are.

Does this go to other aspects of society too? Some of those kill-or-be-killed, no-compromise video games, possibly? Does this extend to our political world as well? Does all of this include the take-no-prisoners, rough-and-tumble online interactions that so many love to engage in?

Gee, here in Lakewood, are we getting so rough-and-tumble that even the eagles moved away?

As a dear pastor once told me. We don't have to wait for the lion to lie down with the lamb. They do that now. Trouble is, only one of them gets up.

So OK, some of us are still a bit too idealistic and optimistic perhaps. I just think that somebody needs to be that way. :D

Compromise is cool. 8)

Back to the banjo and the birdies :D

Gary

I just can't win! I post an Eagle photo, I like killers. I post a Grackel photo, and cute little hunter killer.

Image

Blue Jays, are very aggressive birds, that are as vegan as any bird, with an exception of an occasional worm or grub.

Image

But get near their nest, or walk by them, and they will come after you, and that beak hurts!

It's not a fun as you make it out to be, let's not forget the docu/drama about a pair of mated pair of Love Birds!

Let's let Al explain this one.

Not picking on you Jimmy, believe me! :D

Actually, you could make the argument that birds (Maniraptors and Microraptors) are indeed, the last surviving dinosaurs, or at least, their direct descendants. (Look it up!)

As such, they are highly intelligent, responsive, and very interactive with their environment. They have unreal memories, and exhibit significant individual personality traits. Mess with them and they WILL mess with you, but that point made, they love peace and harmony. Having interacted with birds for many years, I have to say that they need to be respected, and if you give them that respect and love, they will return same with interest. Too many people underestimate birds. Even chickens share some 60% of human genetic characteristics!

Back to the birdies... :D

Jimmy and all,

Not to wax too philosophical or spiritual on you, but you all know me... :D

Each week that the Creator extends to us the privilege to roam above the dirt is a good one. :D

If indeed a week seems "bad", that subjective but somber impression only serves to remind us of our personal responsibility to roll up our sleeves and try to improve things; for that is indeed a great reason that we do roam above the dirt. :D

There are virtually no places that we can stand on this planet where we do not stand above things that once lived, and lived with purpose.

They provide both a foundation and a nurture for our spirits, that we, like them, may also live with purpose. :D

Some people, unfortunately, like to kick that sacred dirt into other people's eyes.

Others however, respect that dirt and build upon it. :D

As my dear (and very ill) late mother once told me..."Gary, all of us are dying. The question is really whether we are living. You're going to live 'till you die, so live 'till you do." :D

It's real simple. To live, give. :D

...to people, animals, to your Creator, to your loved ones, to yourself... :D

Let our buddies, Sammy and Eddie tell it:

Back to the banjo...or perhaps a striped guitar? :D

Thanks Jim for the great pictures. I just like to look at them and enjoy the beauty. I don't feel the need to over analyze them.

I agree, Jim's photos are fabulous! :D

I also agree about there not being a need for people to over-analyze things, especially concerning a lot of other Lakewood stuff, as well.
:D

Back to birdies and banjos. :D

Lori

I am fine with both, and equally fine with people ignoring them. But if they can cause comfort, thought, discussion, positive energy, all the better.

Gary Rice's love of birds, animals and humans is well documented. And, as we all know, life is fleeting.

These babies...

... are no longer babies.

Life goes on, a never ending cycle.

In this version of stone soup, aka "the mosh pit of word jazz" we share, and consume.

If you want to share it, put your name on it and own it, and it doesn't get physical, bring it.

No menu, no control issues. Bring it, and we will try to enjoy it or do something useful with it.

Image

Thank you to all that take part.

Like nothing I have witnessed before, all this week deer have been moving from the side streets to Riverside then south down Riverside. We always see deer but lately we have been seeing 2, 3, 4, 5 7 deer at a time. After dark it has become a deer highway!

Image
While this was just two deer, they came up Wayne, down Crest Lane onto Riverside then south in the middle of the day. 2pm.

A Christmas treat, but be careful driving!
