Recent Power Outages Being Addressed

Postby Jim O'Bryan » Thu Jun 17, 2021 6:08 am

There has been a few power outages recently brought on not by storms, or trees, but semis. More to the point, semis pulling into the Dollar General Store in DowntowN Lakewood. As they pull in the drive to deliver goods, the trucks sometimes grab low hanging wires and break the wires or in the case of yesterday's power outage break the poll.

Yesterday I had the chance to speak with an executive at First Energy, and they mentioned, though they are not actually near the power lines, which are at the top of the pole, but other lines. The two times before it was cable lines, yesterday was telephone lines. As the telephone poles are the property and maintained by First Energy they sent out engineers to find a better solution for all.

This closed Lakewood Public Library early yesterday.

Interesting side note, before the last two administrations deliveries would not be allowed off of residential streets. It has been in the move to destination city, that we have allowed businesses to use more and more residential streets for semis and drive through traffic.

We have a follow up meeting with First Energy in a month.

Dan

First Energy, Cox and phone companies have no problem with that. It solves their problems too.

The issue is when and who pays. Lakewood should be doing this when replacing streets and especially curbs. That it when it is most cost effective.

But instead they cater to businesses and things that they can show in campaign ads.
