Today I had the pleasure of attending a ceremony where Dr. Jospeh Gavlak, NRP, EMSI, not only called out great work by Lakewood Fire and Paramedics but explained why these two calls caught the attention of the Clinic team.
Both calls happened in December of 2020. One a severe stroke, the other a very complicated emergency birth.
As Dr. Cavlak explained, had the emergency teams hesitated, or made one wrong decision, they patients would have possible died or suffered terrible long lasting debilitation. Instead both patients were at the firehouse though one probably didn't notice as she was working a pacifier in her baby carriage.
That said, the parents Justin, Brandy Richmond-Smith and their daughter Sylvia along with Stroke Surviors Ed and Barb Sweeney.
The Smiths and the Sweeneys were full of thanks and praise for Lakewood EMS.
It was nice everyone got a chance to talk and see how everyone was doing.
The awards said...
"The Cleveland Clinic EMS Leadership is proud to present this certificate and Challenge Coin in recognition of the outstanding and steadfast efforts displayed on December 18th, 2020 by this Firefighter/Paramedic with the aid of his team and against unusual circumstances that were presented to them that day, and without trepidation nor delay of action, successfully and expediently planned and executed a successful mission to deliver the very best emergency cardiac care (emergency birthing). May the actions of this Firefighter/Paramedic be recalled tomorrow as the standard by which we should be held to henceforth today.
