All For The Best

Postby Betsy Voinovich » Fri Jan 07, 2011 9:04 pm

Hey all--

I'm not sure how many other people had a really difficult first week of 2011--- and after all of those big plans and resolutions-- but I was walking home with my kids from school in the snow and nobody was in a great mood and I remembered the song, "All for the best" from Godspell. My high school (and the boys school down the street) Villa Angela and St Joes when they were still separate, put on Godspell when I was a freshman and I played flute in the orchestra. I got to know the lyrics to all of the songs in the show, that song was funny and I started singing it to my kids as we went down the street.

When we got home we looked it up on Youtube and found this ultra seventies version from the movie. My kids loved watching this ragtag gang dance around building tops in New York City-- including the under construction World Trade Center--- too many metaphors there to contemplate.

Anyway, in case anybody else is in need of cheering up, and in case this works on anybody else (or your kids) here it is. Happy First Friday Night of 2011! Last week, last year, this was New Year's Eve.

"All For The Best"

[JESUS]
When you feel sad, or under a curse
Your life is bad, your prospects are worse
Your wife is crying, sighing...
And your olive tree is dying,
Temples are graying, and teeth are decaying
And creditors weighing your purse...
Your mood and your robe
Are both a deep blue
You'd bet that Job
Had nothin' on you...
Don't forget that when you go to
Heaven you'll be blessed..
Yes, it's all for the best...

[JUDAS]
Some men are born to live at ease, doing what they please,
Richer than the bees are in honey
Never growing old, never feeling cold
Pulling pots of gold from thin air
The best in every town, best at shaking down
Best at making mountains of money
They can't take it with them, but what do they care?
They get the center of the meat, cushions on the seat
Houses on the street where it's sunny..
Summers at the sea, winters warm and free
All of this and we get the rest...
But who is the land for? The sun and the sand for?
You guessed! It's all for the best...
