SCOOP!!! Clinic To Build 200 Bed Hospital In Avon!!

Postby Bill Call » Tue Feb 17, 2009 7:19 am

Last night I was talking with someone well connected in the Avon, Avon Lake area. He said the deal is 90% done to build a 200 bed hospital at the new I-90 interchange. This explains a great deal.

I am disturbed by two aspects of this deal.

1. Jacobs bought the land to be developed with cash provided by the sale of the Ameritrust building to Cuyahoga County and
2. The Clinic will fund the construction (in part) with its $20 million dollar rental subsidy from the City of Lakewood.

It seems we are asked to pay for the bullets to be used on us.

Just curious...

How many people who live in Avon do you think drive all the way to Lakewood to go to the hospital today? How many people from Lakewood do you think would drive all the way to Avon to go to the hospital today?

Sorry Bill, but I think this is another attemp at creating hysteria over something that's not really an issue. Who cares if they build a hospital in Avon? I would think St John West Shore would have more to worry about than Lakewood Hospital.

BTW, do you have a documented source stating that the Clinic will use it's "$20 million rental subsidy from the City of Lakewood" to pay for this new Avon hospital?

Bill

As I just got done with my 60 minutes of biking, and taking my blood pressure, I feel I might feel up to pondering this subject with you this morning. 120/85/67

First thanks for the scoop.

What part of this is bad, or factual?

Are we losing, 200 patients? Or would they be patients that would have been in another hospital, possibly not a clinic hospital?

Could this Avon hospital be the new "cash cow" that helps Lakewood Hospital?

Are we sure that it is Lakewood's $20 million as opposed to Fairview's, Huron Road's, Main Campus? I am just curious how we know it is ONLY Lakewood paying for this?

Wait, wait, wait

122/83/71

whew!

This was written, with the full knowledge that Lakewood Hospital has also helped to pay for this Project allowing Bill to post, and as one person in this thread has said, "damn, now they saved your life too!"

The clinic pays about $2 a square foot to lease Lakewood Hospital. The market rate for commercial/medical space is 6 or 7 times that. The new construction cost is higher still. Since the Clinic charges the same for services at Lakewood Hospital that it charges for services at Clinic owned facilities the profit on medical services is higher, much higher.

The Clinic has already announced that it intends to reduce the number of beds at Lakewood hospital by 50%. I don't believe it when they say that a 50% reduction in beds will result in no change in employment. The people that work there don't believe it either.

Why does it matter? The hospital is Lakewoods largest single employer providing millions in tax revenue and millions more in economic activity. I happen to think that the loss of that hospital would have a devastating impact on the economy of the City. You may not care but I do.

Bill

I still miss where this fact has been posted.

I have read where they will go to private rooms like Fairview. I also know they are expanding the footprint of the hospital.

Where is the information that after all is done, the result will be 50% less beds?

Bill,
Again, it's all assumptions not based in fact.

Let me ask again my question that you conveniently left out of your response:

Do you have a documented source stating that the Clinic will use it's "$20 million rental subsidy from the City of Lakewood" to pay for this new Avon hospital?

Or can we just say that the statement you made, along with the rest of the accusations you stated, are simply conjecture?

Ok, so the answer is no, you have no documented sources. Thank you.

They should use some of that $20 mil rental subsidy to pay their employees more.

They wouldn’t need an employee food pantry if they paid their employees more.

20 million dollars for 200 hospital beds. assuming an average of 2 hospital beds per room, that is 25,000 a room. assuming the rooms are fully booked, that is about 140 dollars a day. It will probably be much more than that on a patients bill though. assuming the hospital re-pays the cost of each room every year.

So with that knowledge, we could say.

The Clinic/Lakewood Hospital is building a 200 bed hospital in Avon Lake to be the cash cow for Lakewood Hospital.

Correct?

What 20 questions would you ask of the Clinic about their vision for Lakewood Hospital?

Stay tuned.
