Free Press, Free America: Investigating the Promise of Independent Press
7:00 PM - 8:00 PM
What role does independent press play in our society? Journalist Phyl Garland once said, “After the Civil war, there was an enormous burst of energy, a desire to communicate, a desire to connect, with Black people establishing newspapers in any town, even tiny ones. It was their first opportunity to use the written word without fear of reprisal.” Independent press represented freedom then as it does today. Black, Jewish, and LGBTQ+ communities had historically read stories written about them rather than by them and were tired of seeing themselves through the lens of an outside eye. Join the Cleveland Documenters in conversation with members of Northeast Ohio’s Journalism Collaborative leading today’s independent press — including newspapers that have survived from the 1800s and digital publications that have recently emerged. Hear from Kevin Adelstein, Publisher of Cleveland Jewish News; Lee Chilcote, Founder & Editor-in-Chief of The Land; Ken Schneck, Editor of Buckeye Flame; and Dick Peery, legendary Reporter from Call & Post and the Cleveland Plain Dealer.
Location:
Maltz Museum, 2929 Richmond Road, Beachwood, Ohio 44122
