Lakewood Y Celebrates the Past and Looks to the Future
The 1956 Time Capsule from the Lakewood YMCA was opened on April 5th at a luncheon event sponsored by the Winking Lizard. The Capsule was opened by Louise Fletcher, a longtime member and major donor to the 2006 campaign; Anne Palomaki, a member who attended the dedication of the Y in 1957; John McMillan, co-chairman of the 2006 Capital campaign; and Glenn Haley, CEO and President of the Cleveland YMCA.
The contents included a copy of "The Holy Bible," a copy of "The Lakewood Story" by Margaret Manor Butler, and copies of "The Cleveland Plain Dealer," "The Cleveland News," "The Cleveland Press," and "The Lakewood Post." It also included pictures of the Board of Trustees of the Y, pamphlets describing activities at the Y, and pictures of the construction.
After lunch, the new Time Capsule, which will be placed in the cornerstone of the new Y, was filled by many people representing Lakewood civic organizations. Brian Corrigan attended for the city and placed a key to the city of Lakewood. Larry Faulhaber spoke on behalf of Lakewood Hospital. Many Y groups selected items that are descriptive of their activities including the Y's Men, the Aquatics, the Adventure Guides, the Silver Sneakers, the men's basketball league, and the aerobic classes. Their items represented a small fraction of the memories that have been created at the Y. Jim O'Bryan placed the first edition and most recent edition of "The Lakewood Observer" in the capsule.
The speakers for the day included John McMillan, Ellen Todia, Gordon Geiger, Cindy Einhouse, and Steve Barry, all of whom are chairpersons for the capital campaign. Susan Grimberg is the other co-chairperson for the capital campaign. Leslie Chamberlin is the new executive director for the Lakewood Y.
The Public Campaign fundraising events were announced by Steve Barry. $500 and $1000 bricks may be ordered and will be engraved with the donor's names. The applications may be picked up at the Y branch at 18524 Detroit Avenue, First Federal of Lakewood, Geiger's Clothing and Sports Store, and Barry Buick. The Y will also be accepting donations to fill the new pool. It will take 127,000 gallons of water and each $1.00 contribution will represent one gallon.
The new Y will cost $10,500,000. It was announced that $8,177,871 has already been contributed by 478 donors. It is hoped that Lakewood citizens will want to be a part of this exciting new facility for the city.
