We would like to thank the individual(s) who is responsible for realizing what a death trap the "new" cross-walk signals were at the intersection of Detroit and Arthur. Let me explain that they changed the walk signal from going with the flow of the traffic light to having exclusive crossing (all ways) while traffic was stopped on all sides.

With the new concept in place, there were many close calls. While crossing Detroit with my children, we were almost hit by a city truck. We stepped off the curb whle following the walk signal, mind you traffic is stopped on all sides and there is obviously no turn on red. The city truck, which was coming out of the park, DID take a right on red and VERY nearly missed one of my children. Albeit, they should not have turned right on red, it would not have been an issue had the walk signals followed the traffic flow instead.

We have seen many people stand through a couple rounds of the traffic light changes - not knowing they had to push the walk button (as you never had to in the past). Then they usually end up walking with the flow of the trafiic light. We have seen many near misses as cars are not expecting this.

We also saw many people who would push the walk button, not wait for the signal to change to walk and walk with the traffic signal (as it has always been in the past). Thus, the cars would then wait for no one to cross.

It could have been a huge liability for the city. We are glad that whoever made the decision to implement the idea also had the good sense to realize it was an accident waiting to happen!
