Lakewood Board of Education Approved Goals and Objectives
Superintendent Dr. David Estrop pleased to share with everyone that the District accomplished all of the Board of Education approved 2007-2008 Goals and Objectives. It was a very successful year for the Lakewood City School District. As one can see, “It’s Lakewood’s Time!”
Goal: Improve student achievement by use of data and technology on a district wide basis in order to achieve an "Excellent" state designation.
Result: The District’s State Designation improved from Continuous Improvement (the equivalent of a C grade) to Effective (the equivalent of a B grade) at a time when many school districts declined or remained the same in terms of their State Designation, Lakewood improved to an Effective Status.
Goal: Improve instruction and student academic achievement including, but not limited to, those measured by the Ohio Graduation Test (OGT), Ohio Achievement Tests (OAT) and the Value Added Assessment Program.
Result: Increased use of data – we implemented a new electronic student date base (DASL), that was used by District and building improvement teams to produce improved academic results.Increased use of technology – our four new schools provided more and better technology such as the Promethean Boards and expanded computer capacities.Enhanced professional development for staff – we provided more customized professional development.Implemented Year Two of the Ohio Integrated Systems Model (OISM) – this model is designed to improve instruction and student conduct.
Goal: Provide quality educational opportunities for all students while staying off the ballot during 2007-08 school years.
Result: The District did not seek an operating levy in 2007-08 bringing to 7 years the amount of time since the last operating levy in Lakewood.Implemented an Extended Day Kindergarten Pilot Program at Hayes and Harrison Elementary Schools in the fall of 2007-2008. The program was expanded in the fall of 2008-09 to include Emerson and Horace Mann Elementary Schools.Created the West Shore Arts and Communication Technology Program in cooperation with the Beck Center for the Arts and other partners which opened in the Fall of 2008.Planned and implemented a Family Foreign Language Program within the Continuing Education Program. The program received state and national attention.
Goal: Complete the renovation of Emerson Elementary School, Horace Mann Elementary School and the west wing of Lakewood High School in a timely manner and on budget.
Result: Completed Phase 1 of the Facilities Master Plan. Garfield Middle School, Harding Middle School, Harrison Elementary School, and Hayes Elementary School were all opened “On time and on Budget”.Implemented Phase 2 of the Facilities Master Plan. Emerson Elementary School and Horace Mann Elementary School were both opened “On time and on Budget”. Planned and implemented a successful transition for Lakewood High School and the Lakewood City Academy – during Winter Break of 2007, half of Lakewood High School and the Lakewood City Academy were moved to temporary quarters while renovation of the West half of Lakewood High School began. The renovation of LHS is on schedule.
Goal: Continue the District's emphasis on improving student conduct, school climate and school safety.
Result: Reviewed, evaluated, and implemented the recommendations of the Middle Schools and High School Student Conduct and School Climate Committees. This work was completed by the Board of Education’s Education Committee during the 2007-08 school year.Planned and implemented a “Safe Routes to School Program” for the four new schools opened in the fall of 2007-08 and the two new schools opened in the Fall of 2008-09. We also piloted a “Walking School Bus Program” in cooperation with the Lakewood PTA Council, Lakewood Hospital and the City of Lakewood. Planned and implemented the “Tracks are for Trains” program to educate our families about the dangers of walking on the railroad right-of-way. Established an Elementary Student Conduct and School Climate Committee which met throughout the year and produced a report to the Superintendent in the spring of 2008. The report has been implemented to the extent that the District’s budget would permit.
