“The Gorilla” Is In Your Neighborhood…

And is glad to be here!!!

As we move closer to winding down this first season of The Gorilla in Lakewood’s Birdtown neighborhood, I want to take this opportunity to thank all the new friends we have made. We will keep the windows open as long as the weather allows us but when the snow starts to fly we will close the shutters for this year. Let’s hope the snow holds off at least until November.

But we haven’t closed yet for the season! Please stop by to try our Smoked BBQ done by the Chef. We offer delicious sandwiches with smoked beef brisket, pulled pork, turkey breast, and chicken with amazing toppings and sides. The sandwiches are bigger and the sides are included with the daily specials. Check out the full menu at www.thegorillalakewood.com. Also, look for our “Buy one sandwich, get one FREE” coupons.

Shop Hixson’s December 20 And Recapture Christmas, In Ohio, “Mr Christmas” Works In Lakewood

This December 20th, please take the time to immerse yourself in a real Christmas Cleveland Tradition, stopping by Hixson’s Flower Barn, at 14125 Detroit Avenue, and walk through the store, see the historic displays that go back even further than the store which has been located in this location for over 60 years. Bill Hixson has been a friend of my family, both sides, for longer than the store has been open. Actually it was a relative that helped him get the building, when the truck, horse carriage car wash was closing. Shortly after opening he was joined by his longtime friend and partner Eunice who has kept the store running strong and pure to itself for a half of a century. I swear some of the things from opening day are still on the shelves, though so many great memories for everyone that has shopped there flow over the counters at a rapid pace. It is just a perfect place to soak up the holidays, and to bring the wee ones for memories only a grandparent can lay down. “X-Box, huh, Bobby when I was your age, all we had to play with was one of these…” Bobby is not moved at the moment, but when he is dragging Bobby junior to the second power around the space mall, saying the same thing, he will remember that day and smile.

Christmas in the end is about the memories. Moments are fleeting, but memories, good, bad stay with us for a long long time. Walking through Hixson’s is just good for the soul,

Beau Monde Vintage Brings Nostalgia To Lakewood

Nestled in an aged building in the heart of the Detroit Avenue neighborhood of Lakewood, sits Beau Monde Vintage - a vintage shop that is rich in nostalgia. Michelle Miller, a vintage conisseur from a young age, recently opened it August 1st of this year and is absolutely thrilled in her new venture of bringing her vision of style and top quality recycled clothing to the city of Lakewood and the surrounding communties. Miller recalls having that knack for vintage since she was little, having bought several pretty vintage dresses from her local church thrift shop. Her collection has since grown and now she has the sweetest shop, full of curated and affordable one-of-a-kind clothing and accessories from the 1970s and before. The shop is divided into two large rooms, with a hall joining them. The rooms are neatly categorized (ie. swimwear, plus size, sweaters, etc) and each rack is easy to breeze through. The hall houses the dressing rooms, tastefully done with pink, girly accents and merchandise. Looking for a wedding dress? Or maybe something for the curvy gal? Or how about the gal who just LOVES color and prints? Beau Monde Vintage has it!

First Federal Lakewood Debuts New Look

For generations, First Federal Lakewood Corporate Headquarters has called Downtown Lakewood home, and now a new era has begun with a completely revitalized Lakewood branch. As the largest independent mutual bank in Ohio, we have long been reinvesting our assets and customer deposits back into the Lakewood community in the form of small business loans, residential mortgages, and funding our neighbors’ home improvement projects. We are eager to share the results of our own renovation with the entire Lakewood community!

Our branch remodel features a whole new look as well as extensive upgrades that provide customers with an improved approach to full-service banking that is faster and easier, yet still fully focused on delivering a personalized and satisfying banking experience. We have designed the space with both our customers and the entire community in mind. With the new space, we have the flexibility to invite the community in for events throughout the year. That is important to us because we are deeply rooted here in Lakewood—from hiring local residents to supporting community events and organizations—we are focused on working with our neighbors to continually build this strong and vibrant community.

The First Federal Lakewood branch was recently featured on the Lakewood Historic Home Tour and we have restored the branch with a nod to our rich history, but with a fresh, modern approach. As an example, we discovered an unexpected treasure during construction. Our recently restored floor is made from quality Tennessee Marble, a material prized by architects and builders for its pinkish-grey color and ease of polishing. Widely used in several of Cleveland’s historic buildings constructed in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, it can also be found in some of the most notable buildings across the U.S., including the National Gallery of Art, The National Air & Space Museum in Washington, D.C., Grand Central Terminal in New York, and sections of the United States Capitol building. Our Tennessee Marble floor was believed to have been covered over in the 1950s and nearly forgotten. We’re thrilled to have restored it to its former luster.

Now that the renovation is complete we will continue the seamless service we provided throughout our renovation – just with a lot less dust! Please come over and see what we’ve done with the place - and how together we are helping our hometown thrive. Join us on Saturday, October 11 for our Customer Appreciation festivities!

Around The Corner Celebrates 40 Years

You know the old routine, “Who’s on first?” Well that is basically how the Krivosh entertainment “factory” got started. Young Mickey Krivosh nearly 23-years-old, looking for something to do grabs a little storefront over by HJ Pope Company, nothing special. Over the next couple of months he goes to various auctions and estate sales, and opens a Lakewood legend 40 years ago: “Around the Corner.” Where is it located? Around the corner. “What corner?” "You know the corner on Detroit and Detroit!” “Huh?” But there are very few other ways to describe it.

Longtime Madison Avenue Fixture Closes

A longtime fixture of Madison Avenue's East End, the Shamrock Tavern recently closed due to a serious illness in the family. The Shamrock's history in Lakewood goes back more than fifty years, first established by the Westfall family in the mid 1970s, then owned by partners Gino Pitassi, Bob Slimak and Gus Volvos from the mid '80s to mid '90s, and then owned by Michelle Wilburn-Martau and her father Del Wilburn from 1995 until this month. The Westfalls had the Shamrock located on the east end of Detroit Avenue until moving up to Madison Avenue in the '80s to make way for the expansion of the old Koepke Motor Sales. For more than fifty years the Irish-American tavern and restaurant welcomed neighborhood residents, sponsored Lakewood adult recreation teams, hosted weddings and parties, and was the venue for an untold number of community and charitable fundraising events.
