School Year Shortened

Dear Lakewood City Schools Families & Staff,

The Board of Education on Monday night approved amending the 2019-2020 school calendar to change the end of the academic year for students from June 2, 2020 to May 20, 2020. By May 20, the District will have exceeded the state’s required instructional hours. Seniors, who traditionally end their year earlier than everyone else, will have their last day on May 14, 2020.

The change to May 20 will allow for District staff to properly plan for various contingencies for next school year and build a robust curriculum that is likely to include some form of online learning. Teachers and principals will remain engaged through June 3 as the District will use this time without students to provide intensive professional development on delivering online instruction. We will continue to provide our meal pickup service through June 2.

Completing the school year earlier will provide relief for our families, so many of whom are coping with challenges on many fronts. We appreciate the huge amount of effort our families have put forth in helping their students maintain their education during this extremely difficult time. Our teachers will continue to provide the best education possible under the circumstances as we wrap up this unforgettable school year.

Thank you,

Lakewood City Schools
