LHS Team Wins Academic Challenge Championship

The Lakewood High School Academic Challenge Team captured the championship of the WEWS-NewsChannel 5 Academic Challenge TV show! The team of seniors Ian Bell and Evan Suttell and junior Brian Donahoe beat teams from St. Vincent St. Mary and Benedictine high schools for the win. Lakewood finished with 560 points, St. Vincent St. Mary 440 and Benedictine 390. Besides the trophy, the win earned the school $4,000. Congratulations to the team and to advisers Peter Petto and Bob Sedlak.

Thirteen members of the team also recently traveled to Chicago to compete in the National Academic Championship tournament, in which the team finished tied for fifth place. Members of the overall team are: seniors Ian Bell and Evan Suttell; juniors Brian Donahoe, Kevin Cush, Abe Dalisky, Calvin Dolatowski, Erika Hakko, Seamus Holian, Damian Jouriles, Veronica Lee, and Andrew VanAuken; sophomores John Bobik, Nick Cleary, Tim Daso, Michael Ferrone, Frank Llesay, Nikoy Norris; freshmen Evan Bell, Aidan Bohac, Alice King and Kathryn Oleksa. (class status is for 2016-2017) It was the fifth straight year the team has been invited to compete in a national tournament.
