Lakewood Young Filmmakers Academy Enrolling Students For Summer Camp
Looking for something new and exciting for your kids to do this summer? Tired of the same old summer camp activities? Lakewood Young Filmmakers Academy wants to unleash your child's inner Spielberg. The new film school for kids, opening in Lakewood later this year, is hosting its annual Summer Filmmaking Boot Camp where kids ages 12-17 will spend two weeks learning to write, direct and edit their very own movie that will be screened at the Capitol Theatre on July 6.
Founded and taught by award winning filmmakers and television producers, LYFA is a unique addition to the Lakewood community. In addition to the summer camp, the organization will begin offering nightly film classes for area kids. Subjects will include Intro to Film, Directing, Screenwriting, Editing, Acting, Drones and more.
Nine-year-old Camila Figueroa of Lakewood says that classes offered by LYFA are an exciting opportunity. “It’s a great idea because it can inspire kids to express themselves artistically and then inspire other kids through the films we make at LYFA.”
Founder and critically acclaimed filmmaker Eric Swinderman says that while there are many film programs in the area for adults, there is nothing like Lakewood Young Filmmakers Academy in Northeast Ohio, catering to the young mind. “Study after study shows that kids that are engaged in art education consistently excel in other areas of social and educational development,” says Swinderman. “From math and science to self-confidence and teamwork, participation in the arts jumpstarts the brain and teaches kids how to think critically.”
The two week camp will take place at The University of Akron-Lakewood June 19-23 from 8am until noon and at the LYFA Studios in Lakewood June 26-30. The final film created by the kids will be shown at a Red Carpet Premiere at the Capitol Theatre on July 6.
