Swimmers Snag Conference Titles At Champs Meet

A trio of Lakewood High swimmers can now call themselves Southwest Conference champions! Congratulations to seniors Evan Gainous, Preston Polen and Kelley Reis. Reis set a pool and meet record en route to a win in the 100 backstroke and she also topped the field in 100 butterfly at the conference championship meet held Jan. 28 as Westlake Recreation Center. Polen defended his title in the 100 butterfly and Gainous won the 100 backstroke. The 400 free relay of Polen, Gainous junior Colman McGuan and senior Nick Ferrone were also champs.

The Rangers also had a number of swimmers as SWC runners-up: Evan Gainous in the 100 fly, Colman McGuan in the 200 IM, Nick Ferrone in the 200 freestyle and the boys' 200 free relay of Polen, Gainous, McGuan and Ferrone. On the diving side, senior Elizabeth Pearlman finished in third place. The boys' team rallied for a third place finish overall after being in seventh after the diving competition on Jan. 27. The girls' team finished in fifth place. Congratulations to all the swimmers, divers and coaches!
