Middle Schools Earn Sandy Hook Award

Garfield and Harding Middle Schools have earned a runner-up award from the Sandy Hook Promise organization for their participation in Say Something Call-to-Action Week in October. The schools won in the Student Spirit, Creativity and Sustainability category. The two schools will split the $500 award to go toward sustaining Sandy Hook Promise activities in our schools. They will also receive a Say Something plaque, and a mention on SHP’s social media channels and related materials. The schools will host the Start with Hello Sandy Hook program in February. 

Schools that won awards went above and beyond to incorporate the core values of Say Something into their school culture, as well as the community at large. During Say Something Week, students created posters, made a video for the morning announcements, and signed the pledges throughout the week. The students also represented Say Something Week by designating a day for the student population to wear green for the Sandy Hook Promise and blue for anti-bullying. 

During Say Something week, there was continuous collaboration between both middle schools. “We wanted to keep the message consistent across the community of Lakewood and among all of our Lakewood students,” said Harding Assistant Principal Shane Sullivan.
