Free Produce Distribution Returns To St. Edward

Volunteers setting up for the September produce distribution.

St. Edward High School brought back its free produce distribution program, as over two tons of fruit and veggies were given away last Wednesday. St. Edward students, faculty, alumni, and friends bagged and distributed the items in front of the school. Seventy-seven families were served, and the school hopes to grow that number at next month's event.

The program was launched last spring. Richard Kubrak, Director of Service and Outreach at the school, approached the Lakewood Community Services Center (LCSC) seeking another way to help those in need here in Lakewood. LCSC indicated that a free produce distribution would benefit families and people facing financial difficulties. St. Edward then partnered with the Greater Cleveland Food Bank, which provides the produce.

September's distribution included: 680 pounds of apples; a half ton of beets; 952 pounds of cauliflower; 1,000 pounds of onions; 930 pounds of tomatoes; and 1,200 pounds of sweet potatoes. 25 volunteers handled the event. There are two more distributions scheduled for 2016: Wednesday, October 19 from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. and Wednesday November 16th from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Please help spread the word!
