Krebs Scores Five Goals as Ranger Girls Go to 2-0

Coach before the game.

The scoreboard at First Federal Lakewood Stadium broke down this afternoon before Lakewood's varsity girls soccer game against Vermilion. Ranger striker Halle Krebs didn't mind....she decided to light it up anyway.  She scored five goals in a 5-0 Lakewood victory. The win makes Lakewood 2-0 on the young season, with the first conference game against Berea-Midpark looming on Wednesday.

Vermilion entered the game with some speedy players and a scrappy goalkeeper, but the Rangers quickly took control of the game. They kept the ball in Sailor territory for most of the first half, dominating possession in the opening minutes. Krebs scored her first goal in the 10th minute of the first half, firing one in from the left side. Vermilion had an opportunity four minutes later, but Ranger goalkeeper Rachel Lowell made a nice save to protect the 1-0 lead. From that point on, Krebs controlled the rest of the half. In the 21st minute, she scored her second goal off a free kick. Five minutes later she got the "hat trick" with a third goal on a breakaway. She scored one more in the 35th minute to give Lakewood a 4-0 lead at the half.

The Rangers maintained control coming out of halftime, as Krebs quickly scored her fifth and final goal in the first minute of the half. With the game out of reach, head coach Roman Hubach was able to substitute heavily during the rest of the game. Lakewood's defense remained stubborn to the end, and Lowell recorded her second shoutout in two games.

"Our team is just really clicking" said Krebs after the game. The senior, who began playing soccer at the age of three, hopes to play next year at the collegiate level. Coach Hubach loved her performance tonight, "Halle is a player" he said with a big smile. "It feels good to be 2-0 winning away and winning a home game" said Coach Hubach. Despite the win, he said there is lots of room for improvement. "I hope today we got some sloppiness out of our system".  The squad is excited about their conference opener with Berea-Midpark, which will be their toughest test of the young season.

The Lakewood/Berea-Midpark game is scheduled for 7pm on Wednesday at First Federal Lakewood Stadium. Hopefully the scoreboard will be repaired in time for the kickoff.
