The World Would Be A Better Place If........

The 2014/2105 Lakewood PTA Reflections Logo designed by Karina Robinson

The Annual PTA Reflections Competition is an opportunity to celebrate the artistic talents of Lakewood’s young people, ages Pre-School to High School. The PTA Reflections competition welcomes all grades and abilities to explore and be involved in the arts. Annually, hundreds of our students will reflect on a common theme and create original works of art in the categories of dance choreography, film production, literature, music composition, photography ,visual arts and Special Artist. The Special Artist is a new category to the competition that we are all excited about seeing added this year. This is a non-graded category and limited to students with physical, cognitive or mental health challenges.

This year’s theme is “The world would be a better Place if……"

Each student is encouraged to begin working on their submission. The Due date for all submissions is Friday, November 21, 2014. This year helping students and parents along the way in this process is Lakewood’s Reflections Committee that includes  Mona Atfield and Tonya Nanni (Lakewood HS), Danielle Patera (Garfield); Megan Nagel  (Harding); Kelley King (Grant);  Kristopher Payne (Harrison); Beth  Kiraly-Bratko (Horace Mann); Sylvia Masek and  Errin Wischhusen (Lincoln); Kelly Carroll (Roosevelt); Karina Robinson (Early Childhood PTA), and Ruth Koenigsmark, Council Chairperson. This year we are also inviting all Lakewood schools public or private and Homeschoolers, even if a PTA/PTSA is not in place, to participate in the competition. There is a nominal entrance fee for non PTA/PTSA schools.

To jump start the PR for this year’s Competition, Karina Robinson, Chair for Early Childhood PTA, designed this year’s logo and posters to help in our promotion. Also, the Committee has been working together to organize upcoming Reflections events to get students excited about participating in this year’s competition. One of the first events was held recently at Harrison Elementary during Dad’s Walk to School Day. Kris Payne, the Reflections Chair for that school, made large chalk drawings of the world with this year’s theme “The World Would be a Better Place if….” to get students thinking about the competition.

The Reflections Committee and Lakewood PTA is encouraging city-wide participation. We know that by having a wide range of supporters from parents, to local artists to Lakewood businesses promoting and encouraging our youth’s artistic abilities  we will see our largest turnout to date. There are many ways to help and show support today. Begin by “liking “ the Lakewood PTA Reflections Facebook page. Lakewood businesses can download one of our posters and display it on their business window to show support for our kids’ artistic abilities and the Reflections Competition. You can get a poster by going to our facebook page and downloading or emailing us to request a copy. We would like to see a poster in every business window in Lakewood by October 15. Also, any artist wanting to hold a workshop or volunteer to judge the competition in coordination with this program should contact the committee through Facebook or email.

To learn more about the Competition rules go to the Lakewood PTA Reflections page on Facebook or go to http://www.ohiopta.org/PROGRAMS.aspx. Participation in the Reflections competition is free to all students attending PTA/PTSA schools. This year we are extending our invitation to all Lakewood schools public or private and homeschoolers, even if a PTA/PTSA is not in place, to participate in the competition. There is a nominal entrance fee for non PTA/PTSA schools. Questions about the program can be referred to school chairs or you may email lakewoodptareflections@gmail.com.

Many thanks to the Lakewood Observer for supporting the Reflections Competition again this year!
