Youth Scholarship Softball Tournament

 Riverwood Cafe

The day started under gloomy skies and misty rain but the grounds crew had the fields ready and the Lakewood Commissioner’s 1st annual Youth Scholarship Tournament was under way. Six Co-ed teams started the tournament at 10:00 a.m. Pillars of Lakewood, who not only put a team together to play in the tournament but donated Wing Crawl passes for the winning team, had a tough day on the field and finished in 6th place. Irish Kevin’s, a last minute replacement team, put up a good fight but after an injury to a key player exited the tournament in 5th place. Kenilworth, a strong team from the Lakewood Sunday league, fought their way into the elimination round but finished in 4th place after falling to the eventual tournament champions. West Park Station, the 2nd seeded team in the tournament after winning their pool play earlier in the day, was the next victim of the tournament champs and finished in 3rd. Riverwood Café, the powerhouse of the earlier rounds and the number 1 seeded team could not find the magic in the championship game and finished 2nd to the tournament champion Pug Mahone’s.

It took six consecutive wins but Pug Mahone’s met the challenge and took home the hardware. At the end of the day teams met at the Around the Corner, a major sponsor of the tournament, for the awards ceremony and what started as a gloomy day ended with smiles on the perfect day for softball.

The Lakewood Recreation Commissioner’s would like to thank all the teams who participated as well as the Around the Corner, 5 Guys, Serpentini’s Winterhurst Arena, Cleveland Botanical Gardens, Geiger’s, Anytime Fitness, Lakewood Recreation Department, Lakewood Pillars, Shawn Juris Insurance Agency, Slife Heating and Cooling, University Tee’s, and Don Sharp and family whose generous contributions not only helped make this tournament possible but raised funds to support the Lakewood Youth Scholarship fund.
