Garfield Students Trim Their Tresses For Good Cause
Nearly a dozen Garfield Middle School students along with a few friends and family had their hair shorn after school on June 6 as part of the school’s Hair Because We Care Club. The club staged a hair-cutting party on at Revelations Salon & Spa in Lakewood to donate hair to the national Locks of Love nonprofit organization that turns the locks into hairpieces for children suffering hair loss from medical conditions such as cancer or children’s alopecia.
Revelations and its stylists generously donated the salon and the stylists’ services to cut and style the contributors' hair.
“We’ve all been touched by cancer in some way, so doing something like this is a good thing to do,” said Revelations stylist and manager Sarah Carney.
The students have been growing their hair since the start of the school year to meet the minimum 10 inches needed to donate for a hairpiece. Those with less than 10 inches were still able to donate as Locks of Love sells the hair to offset the costs of manufacturing the hairpieces.
Club co-adviser Alina Sandoval started the club last year after her hairstylist suggested she donate some of her long brown hair to Locks of Love. She, along with co-adviser, Liz Street, got the students to commit to growing their hair and then Revelations offered to cut the students’ hair and get the hair to Locks of Love.
At Revelations, there were a few tears, a lot of nervousness, but mostly just kids who felt good about doing good for others.
Members of the Hair Because We Care Club are: Ayah Elbettar, Taylor Keaton, Sadie Lally, Leilani Mattos, Abigail Norman, Asma Moazzamuddin, Dustin Rerko, Olivia Rinehart and Naiomy Vega.
