Everybody Wants To Have Fun!

Wikipedia defines a Block Party as “a large public party in which many members of a single neighborhood congregate, either to observe an event of some importance or simply for mutual enjoyment. The name comes from the form of the party, which often involves closing an entire city block to vehicle traffic.” 

A delightful day of blocking off the street, turning off the cell phones, baking some brownies  then dragging your lawn chairs into the street to kibitz with your neighbors. Ahhhhhh, life is good.   Generally speaking, the adults manage to find ways to amuse themselves, mostly by (gasp!) talking to one another.   The topics on hand are endless; when the baby is due,  the latest remodeling project, the parent that passed away and the first child off to college……maybe even a clue as to WHY they painted the house that awful color! 

Most would agree that the key to a good block party is to keep the kids happy.   A happy kid is a happy parent is a happy party.  Kids don’t really need much help finding ways to enjoy a block once all the cars are gone.  From bike parades, face painting and coloring contests to giant blow up water slides and pony rides…kids ROCK the block!

Whatever the definition, a good old Lakewood Block Party is an event to be thoroughly enjoyed by young and old alike.  After all, everybody likes to have fun.  Lakewood is a community of neighborhoods and one of the best parts of a block party is getting to know the people that live above  or below, next door and across the street.

There are several streets that are well known for their GREAT block parties. But, if I mention Arthur, well,  then I must say Elbur … and don’t forget  Grace …oh geez, there are many more. I’m fortunate to be invited, as an alumni, to one of the aforementioned street parties.  This year’s event was a total BLASTEROO! My thanks to my former neighbors and new friends for good food, huge laughs and great company.
