Has your New Year’s resolution to get healthier become a distant memory? Revive it on April 28th—join Live Well Lakewood’s second annual Wellness Challenge. This year’s program focuses on helping you achieve your personal goals. It’s not a biggest loser competition—in fact, weight loss is part of this program only if it’s appropriate for you. The goal is to help you make lifestyle changes that will enhance your wellness through better nutrition choices, regular exercise and stress management.
The first Challenge session, on April 28th at the Women’s Pavilion at Lakewood Park, is a pre-program screening, measuring glucose, cholesterol, blood pressure, BMI and waist/hip ratio. Participants will spend the following eight Wednesday evenings from 7:00 – 8:15 p.m. learning steps for improving their wellness; checking in with their support group and trying out a different form of exercise each week.
Dr. Meg Gerba Perry, Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine leads off each session. She’ll cover the health benefits of a Mediterranean diet, healthy eating and exercise, heart health, the immune system, emotional eating and stress management, and other topics.
You’ll then have the opportunity to cheer each other on and discuss roadblocks in facilitated small-groups. Then it’s time to get up and move! The evening ends with a brief exercise session designed to give you a taste of different activities you might enjoy. They include: getting ready to be more active, with Travis Gallagher, P.T.; Zumba with Amy Annico, Jazzercize with Karen Kilbane, Tai Chi with Jim Kulma, Yoga and Kick-boxing.
Everyone is encouraged to spend the days between sessions integrating what they’ve learned into their daily lives. Take advantage of our walkable community. Do your errands on foot, and support local merchants at the same time. Lower stress by walking just to enjoy the beautiful architecture and landscape of Lakewood.
The final session, on June 30th, will be the post-program screening, in which measures will be re-taken and participants will be able to see through objective numbers the progress they’ve made. Those completing the Challenge will be recognized on July 17th at the Lakewood Alive & Well Street Walk.
