Adopt A Spot Volunteer Opportunities

For 24 years, the Keep Lakewood Beautiful organization has been recruiting volunteers to aid the City of Lakewood with maintaining green spaces within our community. We have grown the program from seven Adopt a Spots in 1986 to the current 59. We are looking for a few interested new gardeners.

Colorful Adopt a Spots dot our city streets, parks and parking lots. They add beauty to otherwise dull street corners and other venues. Volunteer gardeners prepare their designated spots early in the spring. Then, when Keep Lakewood Beautiful holds their only fundraiser, the Leaf Humus and Plant sale, these gardeners receive free humus to amend the soil in their spots. The City helps us by providing a budget with which flats of colorful annuals are purchased and are given to the gardeners for planting in these gardens. The Keep Lakewood Beautiful organization will furnish all of the other plants, fertilizers and yard waste bags.

Volunteers maintain their Adopt a Spot throughout the summer by watering, weeding and picking up the litter in and around their area. So, when you see someone working on their spot, won’t you please stop and thank them for helping make Lakewood a more beautiful place for all of us to live.

A volunteer appreciation breakfast culminates the gardening season in November. About 60 of our volunteers show up for a delicious hot breakfast, provided by our board members, to share their gardening stories and to make new friends. The spots are cleaned and the flower gardens are put to bed for the winter. We love our volunteers.

Presently Keep Lakewood Beautiful (an affiliate of Keep America Beautiful) is an all volunteer organization in Lakewood. Other projects include the Beautiful Home Awards, Earth Day and the Great American Cleanup.
