Students' March For Our Lives Trip A Community Effort

Forty students and their adult chaperones traveled to Washington, D.C. on March 24 to participate in the March for Our Lives event, a trip that was made possible by the nearly $7,000 donated by the Lakewood community.

What had started out as four students wanting to buy bus tickets to D.C. bloomed into a community project.

When the founding members of the newly formed Student Committee for Activism realized the interest in students attending the march would fill a charter bus, the group raised the cash needed to reserve the bus in just a few days through a GoFundMe account and the generosity of fellow students, teachers, parents, business owners and the community in general. The giving did not stop there, a call out from chaperone and LHS teacher Autumn Sabin for snacks for the trip led to cartons of donations of water, Gatorade, chips and more being left on her porch.

“Our community really came together for our kids,” Sabin said.

Added one of the founders of the Student Committee for Activism Isabella Bryson: "I feel so proud to be a part of a community where supporting social activism and helping out young people is a priority. To pull together our trip to DC it took so many people donating food, money, their time-- and we genuinely could not do it without them."

The students’ effort in mobilizing to make the trip happen caught the attention of media outlets nationwide from The Wall Street Journal, to NPR to our local Plain Dealer and ideastream.
