ICE Lighthouse 2010 - Winter

The lighthouse got covered in ice this year, as it does every year, but this year it got picked up by national news sources and you had to fight for room to get a shot. I am sure this is the most intensely photographed object in Cleveland except for maybe the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame the week it opened. All photos property of The Lakewood Observer, Inc. ©2010

  • The ore boat Maumee coming into Cleveland.
  • This is how thick the ice was! Remember this throughout these images.
  • The ramp and railing at Edgewater Park, bearly 50' ashore.
  • Ice covered plants looking west to Lakewood.
  • The railing looking like "cave bacon" which appears in caves and is made exactly the same way with limestone instead of water.
  • Not exactly the safest ramp in the city!
  • Looking west to Lakewood.
  • The infamous ice light house from the pier at say break.
  • Matt Markling on the pier at daybreak.
  • The railing from the other side.
  • Looking east towards Cleveland.
  • As the sun is up about 20 degrees in the sky and 10 degrees in the air!
  • In the morning light day 4
  • A bird walking around.
  • Pancake ice which is pretty rare in these parts.
  • Coast Guard Station being photographed.
  • Matt MArkling trying to avoid the hazards.
  • A look another photographer. I have not witnessed anything like this since the presidential campaign stops or Niagra Falls. I would be shocked it it was less than 500,000 images. If this was film, we would be on the road to recovery!
  • Matt Markling after we get back from the end of the ramp!
  • pointing out a very strange indent that is about the size of my ass if I had fallen, but didn't, really I didn't!
  • waves of water frozen, beatiful stuff.
  • for over 1/4 mile!
  • it had broken down a large section of fencing. All we could think of was ice freezing finally closes up the 3.5" mesh, and the wind blows it down! Pretty wild.
  • Time for grilled tofu burgers with real bacon on them. I mean, what do you replace bacon with?
  • Matt says, "More bacon!"
  • Coast Guard Station and night.
  • Mr. Green from Lakewood taking photos.
  • Lakewood Saturday morning.
  • Another shot of the ice building.
  • In the crisp morning.
  • Early Afternoon
  • At sunset.

  • End of the day.

  • Little snap of Cleveland at about 9pm
