Stump Grindings

Postby Bryan Schwegler » Mon Jul 28, 2008 6:12 pm

So we had to have a giant tree in our yard cut down because it was dying and the stump was just ground out today. Of course it left a gigantic mound of shredded up stump, etc.

Is there anyone we can call to have them call haul all this away? We seriously have no idea what we're going to do with it.

It was a silver maple.

Of course our backyard looks so empty now. We definitely need to plant another tree :)

Silver maple is considered a soft wood tree and you can probably use a lot of the grindings for mulch around established plants. Fresh mulch is normally highly acidic and should be balanced, but maples aren't as acidic as other trees. You could find pH testing strips to figure out the acid levels.

If you have a place to store the grindings for a while, so much the better. You'll probably want to leave a mound where the tree was or you'll have a depression you'll have to fill later.

Do not, whatever you do, put the new mulch on new plantings before you have an idea of the level of acidity, unless you want to get rid of stuff...
