Q: If you’re an endurance sport athlete, then why be cautious about water?
A: Too much water can cause hyponatremia, a potentially deadly condition whereby the body is leached of electrolytes (sodium, potassium, chloride and bicarbonate). Your body already flushes out electrolytes when sweating, but adding more water to the equation during long bouts of exercise can further flush these vital chemicals from the body. Your remedy: gel packs, a pinch of quality sea salt in water with a sugary carb like honey or a protein/carb/water mix are some ideas to keep your body balanced.
