Fitness does not have to cost an arm and a leg, and as busy parents, fathers need time to unwind and get fit, too. So what are some simple ideas to help Dad get fit? Look no further than these daily tips leading up to Father’s Day 2009.

Fitness Tip #1 for Dads
Enjoy peace and quiet on your own by taking a serene hike or walk in the Cleveland Metroparks. There is nothing more beautiful than the Valley and it’s such a short distance from anywhere in Lakewood that you could even walk to it. If that’s not feasible, then drive your car and park it somewhere that will force you to climb a hill. The Stinchcomb-Groth Memorial Overlook and Sweetwater Landing area are ideal spots. Park your car and start climbing!

Want to bring the kids along for more fun and liveliness? That’s a great idea because it will only help your family bond. Take them for a walk up the hill (I have done the same thing up Stinchcomb in the snowy winter with my 6-,4- and 2-year-olds). Want to up the ante on your fitness? Walk up the hill backwards! (Make sure your heels touch the ground to prevent stress on your calves.) Watch out behind you and stick with the side of the street that allows you to see the cars coming toward you.

Here’s a tip for super-fit dads: run up the hill backwards. (Oh yeah, now we’re talking!) Then you can walk or jog down again. This creates a short-burst interval workout and really works the thighs and mid-section. You will be burning fat post-workout, too...not a bad deal.

Stay tuned tomorrow for another Father’s Day fitness tip.

Your family fitness guru,
