From the Cleveland Clinic....

Cleveland Clinic Injects $17.8 Billion into Ohio’s Economy
Jobs, Construction, Spending and Taxes Add Up to Sizable Addition to State, Local Economies

Tuesday, Sept. 18, 2018, CLEVELAND: Cleveland Clinic boosted the Ohio economy by $17.8 billion in 2016, according to the hospital system’s most recent economic impact report, “A Vital Force in Ohio’s Economy.”

The activities of Cleveland Clinic – the second largest employer in Ohio – supported 119,720 Ohio jobs in 2016, representing more than $7.5 billion in total earnings. Those earnings supported 87,540 households statewide, for a total of $5 billion in household spending.

“Cleveland Clinic is the economic engine of Northeast Ohio,” said Cleveland Clinic CEO and President Tom Mihaljevic, M.D. “We are the largest employer, a major purchaser of goods and services, and a generator of tax revenues for government at every level. Our economic activity supports families, neighborhoods and community life. It brings opportunity and prosperity to the areas we serve.”

The 119,720 total jobs cited in the report reflect both direct jobs (58,610) and indirect jobs (61,110). Direct jobs include Cleveland Clinic physicians and employees, joint venture employees, on-campus hotel jobs, on-campus parking jobs and jobs existing at spin-off companies. Indirect jobs include those supported by industries purchasing from Cleveland Clinic.

While most Cleveland Clinic operations are tax-exempt, billions of dollars in state, local and federal taxes can be attributed to the presence of Cleveland Clinic – $2.25 billion in federal income taxes paid by employees and vendors and $987 million in state and local income, property and business taxes.

In addition, Cleveland Clinic purchased almost $1.8 billion of goods and services from Ohio businesses, while Cleveland Clinic visitors contributed over $158 million to the state’s economy.

Cleveland Clinic produces economic impact reports every three years. This year’s report is based on 2016 data. Since the prior report in 2013, Cleveland Clinic’s statewide impact increased 41 percent, from $12.6 billion to $17.8 billion. The number of jobs increased 28 percent, from 93,560 to 119,720, while labor income increased 27 percent, from $5.9 billion to $7.5 billion.

Cleveland Clinic construction projects made a sizable contribution to the state and local economies. Between 2014 and 2016, Cleveland Clinic invested nearly $808 million in real property improvements, including renovating existing structures, building new facilities, and improving properties in Ohio. That investment supported nearly 3,200 construction jobs per year and exceeded $164 million in direct and indirect labor income, on average, over the three years. The average fiscal impact of Cleveland Clinic’s construction activity during the three-year period was nearly $24 million in state and local taxes and almost $35 million in federal taxes per year.

As “A Vital Force in Florida’s Economy,” Cleveland Clinic Florida contributed $1.2 billion in total economic output statewide, including 7,450 jobs, $426 million of labor income and $315 million in household spending. Additional economic impacts in Florida included: $58 million in state and local taxes; $142 million in federal taxes; $5 million in visitor spending and $51 million in spending on goods and services.

As “A Vital Force in Nevada’s Economy,” Cleveland Clinic’s Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health contributed $47 million in total economic output statewide, including 320 jobs, $21 million of labor income and $12 million in household spending. Additional economic impacts in Nevada included: $1.8 million in state and local taxes; $6.7 million in federal taxes; $1 million in visitor spending and $7.6 million in spending on goods and services.

How many magic beans did Mike Summers promise Linda Beebe, Tom Einhouse, Betsy Shaugnessy et al. to support the destruction of Lakewood healthcare for school children when the rest of Ohio is eating at the CCF trough?

Beebe, Einhouse, Shaugnessy & Barcelona gave CCF valuable medical space in Lakewood High School for FREE that is not helping the children. Only Ed Favre voted against giving a multibillion corporation specially designed medical space in school property for "FREE".

They get an "F" for faux intelligence.

Irrational Public Policy Choices At The Hands Of The Summers Administration

As Lakewood continues the demolition of it hospital and the Cleveland Clinic reports on how important it is for economic development, let's see what the city administration has accomplished.

Mark

I spent last night with a couple supporters of many aspects of Lakewood, and we spoke of many things. In the end we spoke of Lakewood Hospital, why it was sold off and what happens next. I merely pointed out to easy to check facts like. The City of Lakewood ie the residents got NOTHING for $200 million in public assets.

That a private group of individuals that have been desperate to control and develop in Lakewood ended up with $50+ million to do with as they wished. No public input.

And that the new muti-use strip mall carries the name sold to us by Ex-Mayor Ed FitzGerald and he is on the receiving end again, or public dollars and benefits paid for by Lakewood residents.

I have to say when laid out, when the names are put in order, and why the time line is laid out, people are sick, and sick and tired.

As I have pointed out for over 4 years we have been played, and lied to by the very people we trusted as our fiduciary agents.

I ended the conversation as I normally do. "Governor Chris Christie went under federal investigation for moving 28 orange cones on the George Washington Bridge. People went to jail, and Chris Christie run from office. What would have happened if he had sold the bridge and gave 100% of the money to his friends and associates?" There is not better way to explain what happened with Lakewood Hospital. Of course we would have to through in campaign violations, intimidation, hundreds of lies to the residents of Lakewood by the Summers Administration, and the complete collapse of integrity, honesty and transparency by City Hall, City Council, and all but one on the Board of Education.

A total failure of all elected officials, and fiduciary agents, law enforcement, State oversight, and more.

It blows my mind.

Gambling $200 million, actually $400 million in public assets over the course of ten years, our largest employer, and the keystone of healthcare in Lakewood, for a strip mall, named and owned in part by the people that started the debacle. The residents payoff, a black hole that will continue to need our money just to stay above water.

You have summed this all up concisely.

I will leave you with a quote:

"Past is prologue"

We are witnessing a fiasco wrapped in a debacle and this is just the beginning.

We haven't seen the mysterious healthcare study completed by 5 data analytics firms working in tandem for the city administration completed months ago. (It's all bad news.)

We haven't seen the contract with the selected developer to build One Lakewood Place. (It's all bad news.)

We have no idea of what additional public subsidies are under discussion related to that project. (Bad news for the future.)

We still have former LHA Trustees actually voting in city council on LHA matters that they voted on when they were Trustees. (Unbelievably bad news for them and for us.)

We have a city charter that is mostly ignored and public officials that wouldn't know a lie if it jumped up and bit them.

But I think we now have a pretty good understanding of what was lost and how it was lost and who lost it and how much we lost. --That's the debacle. They don't break ground on the fiasco until 2019.
