Back Again Year 6(?)

Emerald Canyon bald eagles are back again. They lost their nest at the end of the last breeding seasons just as the babies were fledglings. They hung around for a couple weeks but had started to build a nest far less accessible up river.

Low and behold, as mating season started up again they quickly built this nest (Eagle nests weigh over 1,000lbs) and they now sit on the nest which one has to assume has at least one or two eggs.

Last year there were two eggs, in years past only one.

Only time will tell.

Great photos! Thanks for sharing. By the way... this suggests that the nests average over 2,000 lbs! http://www.sdpb.org/blogs/news-and-info ... ald-eagle/

Jim-- those pics really capture the elemental skills of that critter. What majesty that eagle demonstrates.

This past weekend Deb and I took a trip up Route 2 to McGee Marsh home to a couple Bald Eagles and a ton of other birds. Along the road we spotted at least 8 bald eagle nests, all with eagles sitting in them. Added to the 4 nests at Old Woman's Creek, the two nests in Rocky River, the one nest at Redwood, and the nest on private property in Rocky River it brings the total to 16 nests easily seen from your car in an hour! This would indicate maybe as many as 40 nests harder to get to. The Bald Eagle was taken off the endangered species list about 5 years ago, and their comeback is amazing.

I would recommend the drive to anyone that is interested. As pointed out here the average bald eagle nest is over 1 ton of branches so they are easy to spot. In a month when the warblers come back through McGee Marsh is one of the hot spots, along with Lakewood Park and Edgewater Park to see this amazing colorful birds.

The post of the trip is in Global: http://lakewoodobserver.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=38&t=24665

It was a fun relaxing day.
