Man Robbed at Gunpoint Detroit Cranford

Postby Bridget Conant » Sat Jan 13, 2018 9:09 am

According to police reports, a man was robbed while waiting for a bus Wednesday on Detroit near Cranford. Four men approached him at 6:15am and pointed a gun at him, robbing him of $100.

The use of guns while committing a crime seems to have increased in Lakewood. This used to be a rather rare event.

I agree, it is alarming how many incidents have occurred. What can be done? More police presence?

I have been noticing the same thing. I believe robberies at gun-point used to be rare.

Here is the full-quote of the Plain Dealer story:

"LAKEWOOD

4 rob man at bus stop

Four men robbed a 59-year-old man Wednesday morning at a Lakewood bus stop, police say. The man was not hurt in the robbery at about 6:15am near Cranford and Detroit avenues, Lakewood police Capt. Ed Hassing said. The man told police he was standing at the bus stop when the four men approached him. One of them drew a gun and demanded everything he had, police said. The victim told police the men took $100 and a McDonald's gift card."

Here is an excellent example of a tipping-point.

Since this mugging occurred during the work day (albeit early in the work day) directly outside of the building where I maintain my business, I spent the weekend evaluating the relocation of my business. That evaluation did not include keeping my business in Lakewood. (Two prior, but recent, incidents of vandalism also weigh into this consideration.)

Here's what I know about recent problems at this intersection:

One Mugging

One Hit-and-Run Accident

One vandalism (the entire block got tagged with orange paint).

One vandalism (the interior of my building was tagged with black paint).

I attended one City Council meeting where a group of residents were complaining to Council about crime on and near their street. The Council seemed disinterested and annoyed. They just didn't care.

I don't think they would care about the loss of your business either. It's nothing personal on their part but if they don't care about the loss of 1,500 high paying medical jobs why would they care about you?

Of course it is a little odd that the City gets all excited about the opening of a new bar or restaurant. :D

Two of the assets that we prize about Lakewood are both walk-ability and good bus service.

I'm going to suggest here that a gang-mugging on a major Lakewood street (as reported in the PD) in the dead of Winter can degrade the assets that we value pretty quickly.

(Nor, is this intended to be a criticism of our local public safety forces, who I view as diligent and effective.)

I am only reporting on how a single event has already changed my safety perceptions for myself and my business guests.

Bill

For decades they care more about new business than older businesses. I have seen them offer new businesses tens of thousands of dollars to open here to go head to head with businesses in the same category. Then steer business to the new business and away from older businesses.

There is a long list of photos of council looking, acting and being uninterested in anyone expressing concern or complaints.

They do not care about 1,500 high paying jobs leaving, actually more than 2,500 last year. They would rather tout new ice cream place, new dry cleaner. Again businesses that will go head to head with businesses the city currently has.

This even extends to opening businesses. I know of more than a handful of new businesses promised one thing, approved for one thing, only to have the rug pulled out from under them. Angelo's Pizza, occupancy cut, Barracco, occupancy cut, 5 O'Clock threatened with closer and fined night after night for doing things they did for years, but suddenly the city took notice because they built homes on Detroit across from them.

Council, those there before last election, and this administration must be changed ASAP before they destroy the city.

Change for change sake is rarely progress.

Perhaps some public shaming - a "rogues gallery" - would be constructive.
