HALL HOUSE NOT SAVED, yet

Postby Jan Greenfield » Thu Apr 06, 2006 11:49 am

From a friend who is a volunteer with the Lakewood Historical Society & who heard it on public radio this morning, comes the news that the new Executive Director, Chris Roynane (he was formerly the Planning Director for the City of Cleveland) of University Circle Incorporated (www.universitycircle.org) has agreed to purchase both the Hall house & the land to allow it to stand there for historical preservation in Lakewood. Chris is aware of the significance of the home as a stop on the Underground Railway & is moving to preserve such historical entities as part of the University Circle Inc's mission in thie greater metro area.

I was told by the Univ. Cir. Inc. receptionist that everyone on staff is at a meeting about another historical site until later this afternoon, but if you want more info, contact Marla Komocki at (216)791-3900.

University Circle Inc received the Cozad Bates house as a donation from University Hospitals. This house is located in University Circle.

UCI does not have anything to do with the Hall house.

The Hall house is still threatened.

Cozad

Postby Rhonda loje » Thu Apr 06, 2006 5:02 pm

Jan,

As a decendent of the Cozad House, I have attached the press release on the Cozad House and the University Hospital/University Circle involvement. This has been more than 3 years in the making. It is very exciting to see Cleveland save a valuable historic landmark. In fact, tomorrow, it is on the docket in the City of Cleveland to designate this structure as a Landmark.

Wouldn't it be great if the City of Lakewood could work out a similar compromise to save the historic Hall House. It can be done as you can see from the press release.

University Hospitals Donates Cozad-Bates Property to University Circle Inc.

Cleveland, OH â?? University Hospitals Health System (UHHS) today announced that it will donate the Cozad-Bates House to University Circle Incorporated (UCI) in order to preserve and celebrate its historical roots. Located on Mayfield Road near East 115th Street, the Cozad-Bates House was built in 1853 by Andrew Cozad. As the only surviving pre-Civil War era structure in University Circle, the home sits on a half acre of land that was once a farm owned by known abolitionists. UHHS acquired the property in 1985, and it has stood vacant during the past 20 years. UHHSâ?? expansive building project, announced in January, does not include plans for the Cozad-Bates House.

As a vital partner in the University Circle community and charter member of UCI, UHHS engaged UCI about donating the property several months ago. Both parties recently agreed that UCI, as the primary advocacy and development organization in University Circle, could best preserve the Cozad-Bates House and communicate its historical significance to the broader community. â??University Hospitals of Cleveland is celebrating its 140th year of serving the medical needs of this community, so we certainly appreciate Clevelandâ??s long and diverse history,â?? said Jeff Boutelle, UHHS Senior Vice President of Marketing and Communications. â??Instead of allowing the facility to remain unused, we felt it best to donate the building to University Circle Incorporated which is better positioned to ensure that its heritage is maintained.â??

UCI will work with UHHS and other community members to preserve and promote the Cozad-Bates House as a vital piece of history in University Circle and the Greater Cleveland Area. Although UCI has not decided on specific plans for the property, the

preservation of the homeâ??s important past will continue with the development of the property.

The Cleveland City Planning Commission meets tomorrow, April 7 at 9:00 a.m. to review its landmark nomination and consider the home for official designation. â??We appreciate University Hospitalsâ?? generosity and commitment to preserving the history of the Cozad-Bates House,â?? said UCI President Chris Ronayne. â??Once it is refurbished and reopened to the public, the Cozad-Bates House will add even greater historical value and significance to University Circle, which is one of the most culturally diverse areas in the region. â??For the last decade, the grassroots coalition Restore Cleveland Hope has advocated for the preservation of the Cozad-Bates House to help illuminate the story of University Circleâ??s prominent role as part of the Underground Railroad. To celebrate the story and mark the Underground Railroad route, Restore Cleveland Hopeâ??s leader, Joan Southgate, walked from Ripley, Ohio through Cleveland to St. Catherines, Ontario in 2002. Ms. Southgate is excited that the historic home will remain not only a part of University Circleâ??s past but also its future with this donation to UCI. â??This is a day to celebrate. Weâ??re extremely pleased that these institutions heard our advocacy and will preserve this important part of Cleveland history,â?? said Ms. Southgate.

I have changed the title on this thread because the two threads are confusing. (HALL HOUSE SAVED and HALL HOUSE NOT SAVED, yet)

I have deleted Maize Adam's duplicate post, also for clarity.
