Does the Historical Society have a list of structures it considers "10s"?

I have been informed by Culeen Carey from the Y that knock-down of the corner building was NOT, REPEAT WAS NOT, envisioned as coming down as part of such a plan.

One, I read the entire "Planning & Development" post, and the only thing I don't understand is, why all the moving parts? If the city wants to build a parking lot, why not just buy the property, put in the meters, and put the revenue against the debt? The issue of what to do with the structure is a side one and should be between the owner and the Historical Society. What would your recommendation have been?

Joan

That is not entirely true. Neither Ken nor I have ever talked about the historical significance of the house. The house is special, and it would be nice to see the Holkamps/Halls(friends) buy the house and move it to Lakewood Park, or next to the Gill House(friend). But I am against the city spending money on something that is not needed, especially there, waste tax dollars where there are none($80,000 surplus in 06!), waste time, as pointed out by others, and really miss the boat while rewarding either a neglectful landlord, or at least a co-conspirator(what would we tell the children).

I know others that are upset because it harkens back to the back door deals of the last administration.

I will not steal thunder, but I imagine something interesting will be proposed at this next meeting, and it will certainly underline the vision of this project.

It just occur ed to me, that Edwards is a terrible spot for a bar parking lot. The place can make more revenue as rental property than it ever could as a parking lot. But just west, is a nice piece of property, that makes no revenue for Lakewood. It would increase bar traffic, and provide a great lot with at least 4 entrances and exits. Use eminent domain. Just the sale of the stained glass would offset any legal fees. Sell the big granite blocks to members that now live in Bay Village, for their backyards. Just south of this lot is another spot we could put a little casino. That property comes with a lot we can rent to Rosati's and Reagel Beagel.

A couple years ago I watched this city goes nuts when it wanted to trade in 1,500 citizens for cheesecake and pottery. Now it is for a couple less feet, and a couple more drunks. While the city goes into debt.

Am I missing something?

Building Surveys

The Lakewood Historical Society conducted a residential survey in 1987 that identified historically and architecturally significant homes in Lakewood. The Lakewood Heritage Advisory Board completed a commerical property survey that rates buildings according to their archtictural and historic significance. This commercial building survey is meant to act as a guide for future development projects.

Mazie

Got a call from an ederly woman that thought it was criminal that the city would knock down the Hall House while the Historical Society was working so hard to save and open other historical homes to the residents. She was excited about the walk at the end of the year.

FWIW

Are these studies available online?

I'd be very interested in seeing them. Perhaps some wider exposure (or repeated exposure) could help frame future conversation.

Dear Observers,

Please join me at an important neighborhood meeting to share your views on the issue of whether City Council should authorize the expenditure of $150,000 for the proposed municipal parking lot at Detroit and Edwards.

The meeting will be held Thursday, April 13, 2006 at 7:45 p.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church, 16400 Detroit Avenue. Enter from the rear lot between Hall and Westlake.

Members of City Council and the administration have been invited. I hope to see you there.

The residential survey is not online. It is available for viewing at the reference library of the Lakewood Historical Society. The commerical survey is currently with the Lakewood Heritage Advisory Board.
