Lakewood High Academic Challenge Team

Postby Edward Favre » Tue May 16, 2017 5:05 am

The Lakewood High Academic Challenge  team finished fourth in Ohio at a state tournament in Columbus on May 13 after finishing as a regional runner-up the weekend before. Over the past few months, the team has been competing both on Channel 5’s TV show, “Academic Challenge” and in Southwest Conference matches.  The team's point total on WEWS was the highest of the season (78 schools competed).  You can watch the team on June 17 in the WEWS “Academic Challenge” Championship.

Participating for LHS were freshman Evan Bell, juniors Kevin Cush, Brian Donahoe and Erika Hakko and seniors Ian Bell and Evan Suttell. In the conference (nine schools), the team finished runner-up in both the regular season matches and the conference tournament.  Though losing only one match in the regular season this year, the team's five-year total in conference dual matches is an outstanding 37-2.  Because of its success (2nd place of 64 teams) last year at the National Invitational Tournament held in Washington, D.C., the team will again be competing at the national level, this time in Chicago June 10-12. The Board of Education approved the trip last evening.

To attend the national tournament, the team is seeking financial assistance. The cost  for the 12 students going to the tournament including registration, lodgings, travel, tolls, and meals will be approximately $5,300.  Checks should be made out to Lakewood Academic Challenge Team – LHS, and sent to Lakewood High School, c/o Robert Sedlak, Mathematics Department, West Shore Career Tech, 14100 Franklin Blvd., Lakewood, Ohio 44107.
