The Lakewood Council of PTAs presented its annual awards at a ceremony on May 3 at Garfield Middle School including $4,000 in scholarships to students and the Educator of the Year award, to Horace Mann & Grant Elementary curriculum and technology teacher Jaime Chanter.

Chanter is a technology leader in the District having founded the popular elementary Future Club, now at four elementary schools and the District’s monthly Twitter Chat. She has presented on educational technology at national and international conferences and recently became a certified Google Innovator.

Educator of the Year nominees from other school buildings were also recognized: Maureen Manderfield of Roosevelt Elementary School, Ken Budic of Harding Middle School, Elizabeth Street of Garfield Middle School and Chris Lamphear of Lakewood High School.

Earning $1,000 scholarships each this year were seniors Ian Bell, who is headed to Carleton College, Rachel Daso (Fordham University), Brendan McCallum (Ohio University) and Julia Neff (American University).

The Helping Hand award goes to a staff member in the school buildings other than a teacher who goes above and beyond in helping students and staff. Lakewood High bookroom manager Pam Williams and student activities coordinator Karen Stovering received the Helping Hand District award this year for their friendly and courteous service in one of the hubs of the school.

The Golden Apple award is reserved for special recognitions of service. It is given to individuals for their outstanding efforts to improve or make a difference on the behalf Lakewood City Schools students and who have been instrumental in supporting and aiding in the success of PTA. This year, LHS PTA president Karen Lee was awarded the Golden Apple for her many years of service and leadership at every level of the PTA in the District.

Council also presented a Good Guy award, in an effort to recognize and encourage more men to get involved with PTA. Kenneth Johnson of Roosevelt Elementary PTA and Nathan Brady of Grant PTA were given the award for their engagement with their school communities and Garfield Principal Mark Walter earned the award as well for his overall continued support of the Garfield PTSA.

The Ripples Award is given to the PTA unit with the most volunteer hours and number of volunteers in the school year. This year’s award was presented to Horace Mann, which had more than 3,000 hours logged by 88 volunteers. Grant Elementary PTA was honored by the Ohio PTA for the greatest membership increase over last year with 54 more members.

Superintendent Jeff Patterson was also honored for his great support as Superintendent over the years, attending every meeting and serving as 3rd Vice President.
Finally, PTA Council President’s Award was given to Grant PTA President Matt Sattler, who was praised for his “outside the box” thinking when it comes to engaging families and creating events that are fun, educational and don’t bust the budget.

Congratulations to all the honorees and to the outgoing PTA Council officers, led by president Kim Walcheck. The new slate of officers were installed at the end of the awards ceremony, led by incoming president Joanne Schwark.

Lakewood is truly fortunate to have our PTAs.
