Lakewood High students swept the Speech category and also earned recognition in other categories in the 72nd annual Rotary Club of Lakewood & Rocky River Speech, Music, and Visual Arts Contests. Earning first place and $750 in the Speech contest was senior Elizabeth Pearlman. Second and third place went to juniors Brian Donahoe and Zach Howe, respectively.
Pearlman, who won $750, now moves on to the District finals competition on April 8. Donahoe won $500 and Howe takes home $300 for his award.
This longstanding contest welcomes talented area high school students who have demonstrated excellence in these areas. Participants are students from the five Lakewood and Rocky River high schools including Lakewood High School, Lutheran High School West, Magnificat High School, Rocky River High School, and St. Edward High School.
LHS students took third in both the Visual Arts and Music categories with senior Zach Dudzik competing in music on bass and senior Greyley Cook in visual arts. Both earned $275. Students earning Honorable Mention include senior Amayah Coburn and junior Calvin Dolatowski in Visual Arts. Honorable Mention honorees were awarded $75.
The visual arts pieces that earned recognition are on display at the Beck Center through April 7.
"The entire event is truly a celebration and demonstration of amazing young talent right here in our community," said Matt Charboneau, Beck Center for the Arts,  Assistant Director of Education.
